Wiley Black Book

UPDATED: The Wiley Innovation Black Book on Exponential Technologies was launched at Wiley Global Innovation Conclave 2019 (WGIC) in Bengaluru, on 31st January. It is a resource guide comprised of 17 co-authored, thought-provoking pieces written by industry captains; they share their vision on the impact of exponential technologies across industries in future forward scenarios. Collectively, these business leaders have formed the Wiley Innovation Advisory Council (WIAC).

For the first time in India, 17 industry leaders have come together to contribute one chapter each, on exponential technologies and to impart what we foresee in the future of work. The book covers the possibilities, the scenarios, the projections — all coming together and stitched in a format where every industry segment has been represented, every function and experience has been articulated.

This book is about the exponential technologies—(conversational) AI, blockchain, IoT, VR, AR, mixed reality, analytics & big data—and how their adoption rates are growing exponentially, to impact business in various industries.

Technology Transforming Business

Technology is evolving at an exponential rate, transforming the world and the way we work and live, more rapidly than we imagine. Driven by tech, the business landscape, business models, and business processes are all being transformed responding to new challenges and opportunities. There is disruption, innovation, and new strategic initiatives. We are moving from products to services-driven today. Companies need to transform themselves for all this, at every level. Business functions like Marketing, HR, Customer Relationships, for instance, are being transformed by technology. Taking learnings from consumer-driven services and apps, the business world wants to give the same experience to customers. So conversational interfaces are being built on top of business applications. If an employee wants to apply for leave, they chat with a bot (and not a person in HR).

If you are looking for use cases, of the application of AI in Marketing for instance, then this book is an excellent resource. It’s a compendium of observations, predictions, opinions, vision, and solid business advice. Hence a must-read for every business leader.

The annual editions of this Black Book will keep business leaders updated on the latest exponential technologies, trends, forecasts—all intending to be a reference for businesses to evaluate the possibilities of new technology adoption.

As Sameer Dhanrajani, Chief Strategy Officer, Fractal Analytics, writes in the Prologue: “Until now we built technology for business. Today, we are building businesses around technology.”

Some of the topics covered are:

  • The New Age of Marketing
  • Disruptions in the Media and Technology industry
  • The InsureTech Revolution
  • E-commerce
  • Becoming a disruptor in the Telecom industry with Artificial Intelligence
  • Future of Retail and the Smart Store
  • Manufacturing 3.0 and the Factory of the Future
  • Impact of AI and Exponential Technologies on the Life Sciences industry
  • Impact of Exponential Technologies on Transportation and Mobility
  • How Automation will transform the very nature of our work
  • Leveraging Fintech technology for growth and customer experience
  • AI to the forefront of the CPG Storefront
  • Governance, Ethics, and Compliance of AI
  • Leveraging AI to usher Transformational Societal Impact.
  • The impact of AI and Emerging Technologies in Travel and Hospitality industries
  • Transforming the Learning Ecosystem

The various chapters in the book have a common theme: AI is becoming pervasive. In the Epilogue, Pankaj Rai, Head of Strategic Planning at Wells Fargo, writes that AI is becoming pervasive, getting embedded in all aspects of our daily lives. He then goes on to answer the question: How should we imagine the AI embedded future?
